Google has announced the launch of its new service; Google Books. Currently, you can purchase books (U.S. only) or download more than 3 million free books from anywhere in the world using this service.
As announced by Google, the aim of this project is to provide users with their own bookshelf on hand, no matter where they are. Purchased or downloaded books can be read using a desktop browser, as well as through mobile devices based on the Android operating system or iOS. Additionally, the books can be read on any e-reader with Adobe Digital Editions software.
As opposed to the Picasa service which provides an access to photos, the Google Books service does not allow users to download free electronic editions without digital copy protection and use them on other devices. Google Books Downloader is a little software that allows you to save these books in PDF or JPEG format (note: it supports only the books marked as "full view").
Moontool is a 32-bit Windows application which runs on Windows 95 and above and Windows NT 4.0 and above. A 16-bit version of Moontool which runs on any version of Windows starting with 3.0, in any mode (including 3.0 real mode, its being one of the few remaining Windows applications which retain that capability) remains available; it is completely compatible with the 32-bit version but lacks some of its user interface glitz.
The source and executable code for Moontool are in the public domain. You are free to use it in any manner you wish without permission, restriction, attribution, or compensation.
After you've downloaded the program archive, extract the files it contains with Info-ZIP or a compatible archive extract program into a new directory, then launch the Moontool.exe program from that directory.

Time Zone Specification
In order to calculate information about the Moon, Moontool must know the relationship between loca
l time and Universal (or Greenwich Mean) Time. This is usually specified when Windows is installed on a computer by a dialogue which asks you to select the time zone in which the computer is located. Since the clock on Windows machines is kept in local time, it can be far from obvious if the time zone is set incorrectly. If Moontool shows incorrect Universal Time values, use
the Control Panel's Date/Time item to set the correct time zone for your location, and/or reset your computer's clock to the correct local time. If daylight saving (summer) time is observed in your locale, be sure to check the box indicating so on the time zone page.
Moontool History
Moontool was originally written for the Sun Workstation under the SunView graphical user interface by John Walker in December of 1987. The program was posted to the Usenet news group comp.sources.unix in June 1988 and was subsequently widely distributed within the Sun user community. As the original posting began, “What good's a Sun without a Moon?”.
In 1988 and 1989 Ron Hitchens contributed additional features to the Sun version of the
program, including the shaded Moon images which were drawn by Joe Hitchens on an Amiga computer.
In December of 1991 I implemented Moontool under the X Window system using the OpenLook toolkit. That version formed the starting point for this Microsoft Windows Moontool which was c
ompleted in March of 1992.
In March of 1999 I made this 32-bit version including a help file.

Despite the word “Calculator” in the title, this is a valuable reference if you're interested in developing software which calculates planetary positions, orbits, eclipses, and the like. More background information is given than in Meeus, which helps those not already versed in astronomy learn the often-confusing terminology. The algorithms given are simpler and less accurate than those provided by Meeus, but are suitable for most practical work.

The Distribution System Simulator (DSS) is a comprehensive electrical system simulation tool for electric utility distribution systems. The OpenDSS is being provided as an open source programto the electric power system analysis community at large by the Electric Power Research Institute ([[1]]) under a BSD license to cooperate with other entities involved in the Smart Grid, or grid modernization, efforts.
The OpenDSS is implemented as both a standalone EXE program and as a COM DLL. The DLL is designed as an in-process server to be driven from a variety of existing software platforms for highly customized types of distribution system analysis. The EXE version provides a multiple-window user interface to assist users in constructing and executing scripts. The DSS basically supports all rms steady-state (frequency domain) analyses commonly performed on electric power distribution systems, such as power flow, harmonic analysis and fault current calculations. In addition, it supports many new types of analyses that are designed to meet future needs, many of which are being dictated by the deregulation of US utilities and the formation of distribution companies worldwide. Many of the features were originally driven by distributed generation analysis needs. More recently, features have been added to enhance the study of energy efficiency, stray voltages, and distribution state estimation. The DSS is designed to be indefinitely expandable so that it can be more easily modified to meet future needs (see the Indmach012 model for an example of this expandability).
Through the COM interface, the user is capable of performing all the functions of the simulator, including definition of the model data. Thus, the DSS is entirely independent of any database or text file circuit definition. It can be driven entirely from a MS Office tool through VBA, for example, or from any other 3rd party analysis program (e.g., Matlab Interface) that can handle COM. One way to think of the DSS is as an object-oriented database of power system circuit data that can perform various common distribution system analysis tasks. The COM interface contains a text-based command interface as well as numerous COM interface methods and properties for accessing many of the parameters and functions of the simulator's models. Through the command line interface, users can prepare scripts to do several functions in sequence. The input may be redirected to a text file to accomplish the same effect as macros and also provide some database-like characteristics

This page describes a LaTeX template for writing up your PhD or DPhil. It can be downloaded from here. The template could also serve as a backbone for writing similar documents, like Bachelor and Masters theses. Using the template only requires minimal knowledge of LaTeX, and it contains in-line comments explaining the most essential LaTeX mark-up in the document, mainly the introduction.tex file. If you don't have a LaTeX environment on your computer, you can find some instructions below (Requirements section).
Using this LaTeX template you will be able to produce a professionally typeset PDF document with useful features not found in most PDFs. Most of the document structure will be generated automatically without you having to set it up manually, saving you several hours of layout twiddling. Favourite features are the automatic placement of figures close to the text references and avoiding orphan lines (see below for a full list).

The template does most of the layout work for you. Nevertheless, you can of course change the layout if desired. You might want a different citation style or you may not need an abstract. Many alternatives are given within the documents of the template as inactive lines (preceded by %), which can be activated as desired by uncommenting (removing the % sign).

To use the template you'll need a piece of software that assembles the PDF from the various text files. There are flavours of this for all operating systems. For example on the Mac, I would recommend TexShop. You might also find a citation manager useful, although not strictly required. You can make the file containing the references (BibTex file) using the web site CiteULike instead. A reference manager comes with additional handy features though. On the Apple computers, BibDesk is the best because its freeware with PubMed import, easy keyword tagging, and PDF linking/viewing.
